Goals + Commitment = Dreams Come True

Everyone has a dream – the difference between the doers and the dreamers is usually one simple thing: Setting A Goal and working towards it, rather than just dreaming about it!

Funny enough, most people have dreams but they have no clue how to make them come true. Yes, they have a picture of the future, but most people are lacking the process of setting the goals and putting a plan in action to work towards making those dreams a reality.

Everyone wants to be successful, and to be successful you need goals. Your goals give you something to strive for, something to meet and be proud of. Have you ever started a goal, but ended up giving up because it was just too hard to achieve? If so, you are not alone.

Statistics show that only 8% of people actually keep their new years resolution – what is the secret that those 8% have that we regular people don’t? Why can successful people reach their dreams? It’s all about your mindset and action plan.

Goals can generally be placed into two categories – long-term goals and short-term goals.  Long-term goals are your vision – where do you want to be in 5 years – what does your life look like?  Short-term goals are the smaller pieces that need to be put into place in order to work toward achieving your long-term goals.

It’s important to set your long-term goals first, and then your short-term goals – asking yourself – does this goal set me up to achieve my long-term goal?  If it doesn’t, is it worth the time and effort to do?

What are your dreams? Be sure to dream big!  Is your dream to retire at 50 or to sell your company for millions? Being clear (and applying SMART criteria) is a fundamental step in your journey because you can’t reach your destination unless you know where you are going.

Let’s look at an example.  Your long-term goal might be to open an agency and have 50 people working for you. Now you need to figure out how you are going to get there.  What are the resources that you will need?

  • Who will you need to hire right away?  Focus on your strengths and hire your weaknesses!
  • Will you need to have an office space, or will you be virtual?
  • What kind of growth do you need each year in order to achieve that goal in the timeframe you are looking at?

These types of questions will help you become clear (and realistic) about your long-term goal, and help you to identify the short-term goals you will need to get you there.

Don’t forget to document your goals and post them where you can see them every day.  This simple act will help you focus and stay on track!  You should always be working towards your end goal and if what you are focusing on isn’t helping you get there – don’t do it (or hire someone to do it for you!)
